BIOGRAPHY

José is a multidisciplinary artist who describes himself as an artisan, he was born in Mexico and resides in Charlotte, North Carolina since 1996. Vázquez writes poetry and short stories. In 2011 wrote a series of poems for the Mexican Masks exhibition on permanent display at The Mint Museum for the Artfusion event. He has read his work at universities, coffee shops, art galleries, radio stations, museums and public libraries. In 2012 founded the poetry ensemble ArteSanos de la Palabra with which, in 2014 he co-wrote the book The Fragrance of Water. That same year the group dissolved and co-founded the poetry group Voz ES.

He also creates visual art mostly with salvaged and found materials. He believes that things, just like people, deserve a second chance.

In the year 2013, he created the documentary, Five Dollars for My Story. The content focused on the life stories told by several people he encountered living in the streets of Charlotte.

José’s main hobby is photography (in 2008 won first prize at the RadioVision contest organized by the NPR radio station WFAE 90.7 with his photograph titled “My Cup of Coffee”).

Currently he is member of the group MAS+arte a group he co-founded with artists from Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina and El Salvador to promote and support creative efforts of artists in the Charlotte area.

This year he published Icaro Vuela de Noche his first bilingual poetry and photography book.
